Hellraiser: Revival Enemies: Cultists, Unworthy & More

Saber splits Hellraiser: Revival’s enemies into two groups you fight and one you only survive. Names below are Saber’s own, from the Gameplay Overview trailer, the “Horrors” developer diary and the narrative director’s Future Games Show deep dive.

The Scarlet Church (human enemies)

A cult “obsessed with the Cenobites” that wants to make Cenobites of its own on Earth, ones it can control, to grant itself endless pleasure. To do that it needs the Genesis Configuration in your hands. It is led by a charismatic figure named Marlowe and backed by “unholy priests, deviants, and cultists”.

How they fight: the developers say they “use weapons, all kinds of weapons, tactics” and behave like people. Demo players found them predictable: they patrol set paths and can lose track of you if you hide under a table.

How to beat them:

  • Unarmoured cultists fall to one headshot or a few blade hits.
  • Armoured heavies (the “gimp” in full armour in the demo) need a blunt weapon, or their armour shot off first. One demo player mag-dumped a pistol into one because they had no bat.
  • Stealth works. You can sneak up and execute some enemies before they react.

The Unworthy

Once human, the Unworthy “sought after the ultimate experiences of sensation but were denied by Leviathan”. Interred in the Labyrinth and tortured, they are released by the Genesis Configuration and come for you because they think the box is their way out. Saber says they “think and behave differently” from cultists and “swarm the players from time to time”.

Named types (Gameplay Overview trailer):

TypeWhat Saber saysHow to handle it
Runners”Swift runners”Back into a corridor so they come one at a time
Bursters”Volatile bursters”Keep your distance; shoot before they close
Embracers”Terrifying embracers”Do not let them grab you; dodge, then punish

Saber also talks about “wretches” and “deviants” in its store copy; those read as descriptions rather than separate types.

Armour and dismemberment

Some enemies wear armour you have to target and break off before you deal real damage. Dismemberment is a system, not just gore: the developers say you will sometimes be “required” to dismember an enemy to defeat it, using melee, guns or powers. Traps you lay down dismember too.

Executions and Suffering

Stun or wear down an enemy and you can execute it. Executions collect Suffering, the fuel for the Genesis Configuration’s powers, so fighting well is how you keep the box charged. See the Genesis Configuration guide.

Human villains with names

  • Marlowe: leader of the Scarlet Church.
  • Bruno: described on the Hellraiser fan wiki as a sadistic artist; his keycard is one of the demo’s key items.
  • The Prophet: appears in the demo’s painting puzzle alongside Marlowe.

Saber has kept the rest of the cast back for launch.

And the ones you cannot kill

Pinhead, Chatterer, Butterball and the Female Cenobite are not enemies in the usual sense. The developers are clear that “you will never be able to defeat them or kill them”. How each encounter works is on the Cenobites page.
