Hellraiser: Revival Cenobites: Pinhead, Chatterer & More

Saber recreated the four Cenobites from the 1987 film, and gave each one a different role in play. The quotes below are from the “Cenobites” developer diary (April 2026) and Saber’s interviews.

Who is in the game

CenobiteRole in Hellraiser: RevivalVoice / notes
Pinhead (the Hell Priest)The bargain at the heart of the story. Has a specific goal this time.Doug Bradley, back for the first time in nearly two decades
ChattererThe chase. Built around gameplay: “the player will have to run”Teeth chattering and footsteps warn you
ButterballMostly in “very disturbing” scenes; seen in Labyrinth sections
Female CenobiteAppears mostly in the real world, close to Aidan, persuading himVoice processed with delays and reverb to sound “ethereal”

The developers say all four are present “to varying degrees” and that there are no new Cenobites and no cameo by the film’s human characters (Frank, Kirsty, Julia).

You cannot kill them

This is the most important thing to know. In the developers’ words: “You will never be able to defeat them or kill them, but you will have ways of dealing with them.” There are no Pinhead boss fights with a health bar. Instead:

  • Run when you have to.
  • Hide: the overview trailer says outright that “sometimes the best option against powerful enemies is to hide”.
  • Work out the rules of the encounter. A preview that played the same Labyrinth section a year apart met Chatterer the first time and Butterball the second, which suggests different Cenobites can take the same role.

Chatterer: how the chase works

In the demo, Chatterer stalks you through corridors: try one direction and he is there, turn around and he appears somewhere else. The tip from the trailer: “If you hear teeth chattering, get the hell out of there.” What players learned:

  • Use quick-turn to check behind you; several reviewers said this is the first game where quick-turn earns its button.
  • Find the corridor where he does not cut you off and commit to it.
  • Do not waste ammo; he does not go down.

Pinhead and the bargain

Aidan follows his girlfriend Sunny into the Labyrinth and strikes a deal with Pinhead to get her soul back, and in doing so unwittingly starts Pinhead’s ritual “to unleash greater pain and pleasure than ever before”. Doug Bradley points out that Pinhead “is not really a killer… it’s the suffering”. The writers gave him a goal of his own this time; what it is, and whether he gets it, is the central mystery.

Pinhead also has to be earned: the team says he is “someone who you need to kind of earn his appearance and his attention”.

Leviathan

Above them all is Leviathan, the geometric god of the Labyrinth, visible in the sky in the demo. Leviathan is who rejected the Unworthy, and the demo even has a “Leviathan Puzzle”. See story and characters.

Pinhead in other games

Pinhead was also a licensed killer in Dead by Daylight from September 2021 until April 2025 (also voiced by Bradley). That chapter has been removed; Hellraiser: Revival is the first standalone Hellraiser game.
